Tis the season for holiday decorations
By Melissa Wirkus
The holiday
season is here and that means it is time to break out
the holiday decorations for your home, or buy some new
ones to make things more festive than ever for 2006.
From hanging lights, to decorating the table with special
dinnerware, getting the home ready for the holidays
is as exciting as the actual festivities themselves.
Your options are endless during this time of year, so
why not try something fun and out of the ordinary for
this year’s holiday season.
A December 3, 2006 article by Elaine Markoutsas of The
San Diego Union Tribune, “All through the house,”
discusses how you can decorate your home
to make it very festive this season.
“If you can't help but be seduced by the magic
of the season, no doubt you've given some thought to
holiday decorating.”
“And even if you're stuck on traditions with an
almost ritualistic fervor – stringing up outdoor
lights, trimming the tree, setting the table with special
dinnerware, putting up the family crèche or a
menorah for Hanukkah – you probably can't resist
introducing a new bauble or two.”
Although it is nice to follow the traditional decorations
you have used in the past years, incorporating new trends,
colors and ideas to your decorations can be something
very fun that will give your old decorations that special
kick.
You do not have to go out and buy
all new decorations this holiday season, which is never
a good idea for anyone’s budget; you can buy a
few new pieces that will help to bring everything together
and keep things modern.
“Although some holiday decor is an obvious focal
point in the home, most falls into the accessory category.
A well-chosen decorative piece or three can add an instant
dash of color, personality and style.”
“A simple way to start is to substitute or supplement
items that are part of your permanent interior landscape.
Toss a seasonally themed fancy throw over the arm of
a chair or sofa. A luxurious velvet or brocade lends
black-tie formality but still suggests comfort.”
Festive throw pillows are also a good idea to add a
little cheer to the living room or family area without
breaking the bank or looking gaudy.
Also, consider changing out your year-round candles
with ones especially made for the holidays. Having a
nice candle display is always something nice to have
out during the cold winter months.
“Change or add to a collection of candles, which
can lend an especially dreamy glow this time of year.
A Venetian glass candleholder in a modern shape, a suggestion
of an angel with wings and praying hands whose gown
flares at the base, is an elegant conversation piece.
The source is Vietri, an importer of Italian-crafted
products.”
Consider adding holiday linens to your bathroom or kitchen.
There are a variety of decorative hand towels and even
little soaps that will bring some cheer to any guests
who use these rooms, as well as your own family
too.
“Even the simplest ideas can be carried off with
flair. A metallic sheer embossed ribbon, snaked through
a woven wicker pet basket, is a thoughtful decoration.
A bow with trailing streamers, punctuating the top of
a mirror, might frame a long ribbon to which you can
fasten favorite holiday cards,
perhaps some handmade by your children.”
This holiday season, think outside the box and make
your home extra cheery this holiday season.
